  • Guidance Notes on Safety and Health of Hand-dug Tunnelling Work《手挖隧道工作的安全與健康指引》

    SRSO NEWS

    Dear Members,

The Society has received the captioned information from Labour Department for your information.

    Dear Sir /Madam,

The Labour Department (“LD”) is highly concerned about the occupational safety and health of employees/workers engaged in the hand-dug tunnelling work.  In this regard, LD, in collaboration with relevant industry stakeholders and upon a round of comprehensive consultation, has formulated a set of “Guidance Notes on Safety and Health of Hand-Dug Tunnelling Work” (“GN”) for compliance by the industry.

The GN, among others, requires that the “heading” hand-dug tunnelling method could only be adopted under exceptional conditions and where environment permits, and specifically sets out the stringent measures to be taken by the relevant duty-holders when such hand-dug tunnelling work is unavoidable. The GN shall take immediate effect, and for those hand-dug tunnelling works already commenced, efforts should be exercised to comply with the GN as far as reasonably practicable.

The GN can be downloaded from the following website’s links.

    Simplified Chinese version:

Hard copies of the GN will be available for collection at the divisional offices of the Occupational Safety and Health Branch (“OSHB”) of LD in February 2018.  The addresses and telephone numbers of our offices can be found at Labour Department’s website at http://www.labour.gov.hk/eng/tele/osh.htm.

    Abstract of the Seminar :

Work-related musculoskeletal injuries (WMSI) represent a major source

of work disability. There are two types of WMSI in the workplace. Acute

WMSI most often develops from a specific mechanical stressor that

traumatises certain musculoskeletal tissues and results in the sudden

onset of pain and possibly movement limitation. On the other hand,

chronic WMSI seldom occurs during a single incident of injury. These

injuries have been given a number of labels including cumulative trauma

disorders, repetitive trauma disorders, repetitive strain injuries and

overuse syndrome. They are defined as disorders or diseases of the

musculoskeletal system, which may be caused, aggravated, accelerated or

exacerbated by workplace exposures and impair the work capacity of the

worker. This seminar will introduce common cumulative trauma disorders

at the workplace and discuss how to use ergonomics to prevent WMSI.
